STIVALI x MATHIAS ROSENZWEIG

Editorial Perspective

From New York to Lisbon, passing through the backstage of the main fashion weeks, Mathias Rosenzweig has built a path that crosses journalism, style and culture. Editor of V Magazine and an attentive voice to contemporary narratives, he talks to Stivali about his references and inspirations.

Stivali is synonymous with… Divine curation.

How would you define your style? Extremely relaxed (I don’t like to stand out in a crowd at all), but with small nods to what is interesting to me about current trends.

The last piece I added to my wardrobe… a pair of dark green trousers from Sacai.

How to elevate a coordinate… Combine a “banal” set with designer sneakers or other accessories that show that you have good taste, even if in a discreet way.

What is the most special piece in your closet? A coat-blazer from Comme des Garçons that I bought second-hand in Tokyo.

A trend you secretly love? And one that I hate? I love the return of the flip-flops, because in fact I never stopped wearing them… even when they were less “acceptable”! And I don’t hate the Labubus, but I don’t fully understand them either…

The best of your profession… It’s being able to meet some of the most interesting creative people in the world.

An achievement that changed his career… Publish a book of independent poetry called BOYS WANT F(OL)LOWERS. I love writing for magazines, but I was afraid to share my creative writing until I finally published this book.

Your work mantra… All good things take time. The older I get and the more I work, the more I realize that “overnight success” is almost always an illusion.

What is the best and worst advice you have received at work? The worst thing was that they told me not to become the editor of a fashion magazine. I was told this 12 years ago, claiming that the days of fashion editors were numbered. The best was… “if you spend enough time at a barbershop, you might get a free haircut” (That is, the time and people you spend time with matter).

Working in fashion taught her… About fashion itself. When I was hired by V Magazine, I had spent most of my time being a music journalist. I didn’t know that Dolce & Gabbana was an Italian brand… I didn’t know anything until I sat down in the parades, took it all in and felt like I was getting the education of my life.

How the morning begins… I make a cup of coffee and shower almost every morning. In the bathtub, I answer emails, read some French to practice, and make the to-do list for the day.

The best way to spend 20 minutes… Grab a pen and paper and make a list. What are you feeling today? What are your goals for the day? What happened recently and what do you want to remember? Writing by hand stimulates different parts of the brain than when you’re typing. It can help you reflect, reorganize and re-energize.

The most memorable party where you have ever been… On the last day of London Fashion Week, one of the years, I went alone to the Chiltern Firehouse for a “I’m glad it’s over” dinner. I just wanted to switch off and listen to true crime podcasts, nothing related to fashion, but I ended up meeting several other editors, who noticed Naomi Campbell slipping into a secret room. Encouraged by a few bottles of wine, we told the doorman that we were with Baz Luhrmann, who we had also seen enter. For some reason, he believed us and let us in at a small intimate fashion week party with the best free cocktails and caviar entrees I’ve ever tasted. The biggest thrill was not so much being at the party, but being able to sneak in — I was already about 30 years old and hadn’t “sneaked in” a party for at least a decade.

The three best places to go out in Lisbon… Cricket Palace, Another Scene and (literally) just the garden of Praça das Flores.

Who are your favorite writers? Ottessa Moshfegh, Joan Didion, Sally Singer (Vogue), Murakami, Garth Greenwell, Eve Babitz.

What will we find in your playlist right now? I’ve been listening to a lot of what I heard in elementary school, like Imogen Heap and t.A.T.u. I recently discovered Charlie Megira, whose sound is super distinctive and interesting.

What is your greatest luxury? I don’t like to cook, so I probably eat it out too often…

What words or expressions do you use the most? “Insane”.
